2023-24 Nighthawk Basketball Coaching Staff
Varsity Head Coach: Brian Wethers -- 10th year Varsity Head Coach, 12th season overall.

Wethers enters his sixth season as Head of the Nighthawk Boys Basketball program. He previously ran two other local high school programs; Calvary Murrieta and Linfield Christian. Wethers was the Director of Basketball Operations at the University of California-Riverside. Wethers attended the University of California-Berkeley (1999-2003) where he was a four-year starter for the Golden Bears. He holds the school record for most points scored in a single NCAA tournament game with 27. After college, he went on to play professionally overseas in numerous countries; Germany, France, Australia, Ukraine, New Zealand and Lebanon. He also spent time in the NBDL with the Bakersfield Jam. While playing in Australia, Wethers led the league in scoring and was named League MVP.
Wethers #25 hangs high above the north-end basket in the Hawk House. During his time at Murrieta Valley, he was a four-year Varsity starter (1995-1999), All-League four years, League MVP as a Junior and Senior, Riverside County Player of the Year his Senior year, All-State his Senior year and a Top-25 National Recruit. Wethers remains the programs all-time leading scorer.
Wethers is married to his wife, Meghan and they have two children; Victoria and Donovan.

Varsity Assistant Coach: Andrew Hernandez -- 3rd year Varsity Assistant Coach, 3rd season overall.

Hernandez enters his seventh season in the Nighthawk Basketball Program. As a student, Andrew was the Varsity Team Manager all four years (2016-2020) handling numerous responsibilities, such as; scorekeeper, videographer, water/snacks, and team functions. As an Assistant Coach he runs the programs Instagram, Twitter, website, calendar, collects film and scouts via HUDL, and does statistics for maxpreps.
Andrew looks forward to continuing his Nighthawk coaching career, while making a positive impact on the lives of the student-athletes he coaches teaching the game that he loves.

Varsity Assistant Coach: Caleb Giordano -- 2nd year Varsity Assistant Coach, 2nd year overall.

Giordano was born in La Mesa, but moved to Temecula at the age of six. He graduated from Great Oak High School in 2016 where he was named a Captain his Senior season and went on to be named 1st team All-Southwestern League. He played in the Riverside County All-Star Game; winning the Dunk Contest, 3-Point Shootout, and the MVP of the game. After high school, Giordano attended Impact Academy in 2017-18 before attending Miramar Junior College. Following his one season at Miramar he transferred to San Diego State University (2018-20). Giordano continues to pursue his professional basketball career looking to play overseas or in the NBA. Until then, he is a Nighthawk through and through. He was driven to coach alongside his longtime trainer/coach, Brian Wethers. He hopes to learn and understand the game even further coaching within the Nighthawk Basketball Program.

Junior Varsity Head Coach: Tristan Floren -- 2nd year Junior Varsity Head Coach, 4th year overall.

Floren was raised in the small Texas town of Kerrville. While in Texas, he was a Varsity student-athlete in both basketball and football as a Freshman and Sophomore. Before his Junior year his family moved to Southern California, where he played his final two years of high school at Vista Murrieta. Floren would play AAU basketball for Team USA under Jeremy Heinkie and Michael Bertuflo, Triple Threat coaches; Eric Mobley and Ron Newble, as well as Team Evolution coaches; Terry Johnson and Wesley Adkins. Basketball was not Coach Floren's #1 sport football was. He went on and played at San Diego Mesa College.
This is Floren's second season coaching in the Boys program. He coached with the Girls program and Varsity Head Coach Alison Rutledge the past two seasons. He began coaching Rec ball at the age of sixteen and runs his own AAU club; MTM. Coach Floren is excited and thankful for the opportunity Coach Wethers has provided. He will make sure the Junior Varsity team is ready to compete for a Southwestern League championship.

Freshman Head Coach: Mark Nielsen -- 7th year Freshman Head Coach, 17th season overall.

Coach Nielsen enters his seventh season as the Freshman Head Coach in the Nighthawk Boys Basketball program. He has been coaching in the Southwestern League for thirteen seasons in both; basketball and baseball. Coach Nielsen has coached Freshman Baseball at MV, Freshman and Varsity Basketball at Murrieta Mesa and Murrieta Valley.
Nielsen graduated from Lakewood High School where he played Varsity basketball for three seasons and was apart of their 1982 CIF Championship team. He made All-CIF, All-League, All-City and All-South Bay. He earned a 4-year basketball scholarship to Cal Poly Pomona and played one season professionally overseas in China.
Nielsen is retired, married to his wife, Margarete and has three children. His son, Kyle, graduated from MV and played baseball at Cal Poly Pomona. His daughter, Katelyn, graduated from MV and earned a scholarship to Cal State Fullerton for Volleyball. Katelyn begins Med School in the fall. His daughter, Maggie, is currently a Senior at MV and received a scholarship from Azusa Pacific for Volleyball.
